Pegasus & Corringham v High Roding Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 03 Jul 2010 at 1.30
High Roding Cricket Club Won By 32 Runs

Match report Well that's a first with HR, winning a game playing away to at Pegasus!. I remember playing my very first league game for HR when Barry Clayden was in charge and James Crawford bowled an over which went for 20 wides which we lost and we have never won a game playing on that ground since. In many ways we owe our win to two big performances yesterday although again a very good team effort on a hot sticky day was the reason to see us home winners for once, keeping our title charge on track.
Orban Holdgate batted as well as I have seen anyone bat for HR on a wicket that was too dry and started to rise sharply off a length. Batting was never easy, not just because the wicket was playing up but also as it was very very hot. Winning the toss for only the 2nd time this season helped,as it kept our ageing opening bowlers in the shade for the hottest part of the day. For some reason Craig Miller was full off beans (probably overdosed on the Nurofen) running on and off the pitch with drinks. That soon changed when he had to go out and bat with 10 overs left to play. Walking off the pitch not out 30 red in the face and puffing for air he collapsed on the side crying for water while we all swanned off for our well deserved tea in the air conditioned rooms at Pegasus leaving him to die. Orban Holdgate on the other hand being a fit 17 year old, scored a superb 109 and even had time to get in a quick cold shower before HR finished on a very competitive 265-8. Well early comments that Pegasus would not get anywhere near that total was a worry for the HR Captain as it was clear that some of us had written them off already and as it was to prove, could be dangerous. HR started off briskly with the ball whizzing past the Pegasus batsman nose and shoulders at some knots and very soon Gallop was to see off the dangerous and key player, Pegasus captain for a golden duck. Next 10 overs would see Nick Dawson catch a couple of sharp low catches behind the stumps and the score move to 25-3 with most of their big guns back in the pavilion and Laird looking like getting out any time. It was at this stage when my thoughts sprung back to that very first game i played with Barry Clayden when Jimmy had a mad over bowling all those wides as out of nowhere with HR well on top, Craig & Travis had a funny half hour bowling wides and half trackers that got dispatched to all parts. At the 15 over drinks break, Pegasus were now 65-3 some 5 runs ahead of us at the same stage in the game. The usual captain team talk at drinks (bollocking) to help rally the troops seemed to spring them back into action as Miller, Baz and Jeff slowed things down increasing pressure and a couple more wickets but still the dangerous Laird was at the crease and now joined with the big hitting Gray. Run rate required was only 8 per over and Gray was easily hitting 1 boundary per over. With Laird on 75 and Gray on 54 and score now 180-5 and run rate required still only 8 per over, Captain Mel was worried. We had to get a wicket soon and it came with the re-introduction of Miller accounting for Lairds wicket caught again by Dawson low and to his right. Captain had run out of options as Gray simply moved up another gear, hitting Jeff Clarke for 2 big sixes into the tennis courts. Turning to Adam Holdgate as it was a wicket that suited someone who could hit a back of a length, Mel was looking for someone to just bowl outside off stump to keep Cray quiet and the pressure eventually told accounting for Grays wicket caught Ben Tadman at cover bowled by Adam. With the run rate now at 12 per over and two new batsman at the crease, Miller was able to clean them up easily and ended up with figures of 5-48. Pegasus did very well to end up all out 233 and again HR needs to learn how to finish off sides with a killers instinct and not go to sleep as we have done several times this season, if we want to end the season as league winners. Well done again boys, good team effort
