High Roding Cricket Club 2nd XI v Hatfield Heath on Sat 12 May 2012 at 13:30
High Roding Cricket Club Won 4 wkts
Match report
At last following a few days of wind and sunshine the 2nd team were able to start their HECL season in Div 3 against Hatfield Heath. HR captain Richard Pilcher won the toss and put Hatfield Heath into bat. Hatfield openers batted cautiously, riding their luck before exhibiting more fluent stroke play as they scored 119 runs in 90 minutes against some tidy HR bowling from Mark Heywood and Dan Bush and supported by smart fielding. After drinks were taken HR rallied and Tom LeMasurier took his first wicket for the club courtesy of a blinding low catch taken by Mike Richardson in the covers. This marked the start of a rousing comeback by the home team.Sam South bowled economically from the Pavilion End to frustrate the visitors whilst Adam Holdgate's one over spell resulted in another wicket as did Callum Allington's probing leg-spin.Mike Richardson then began a very productive 6 over spell, in which he bowled excellent line and length to take 6 wickets for 4 runs to bring the Hatfield innings to a close on 212.
HR openers Adam Holdgate and Reece Hussain started the reply with some careful strokeplay putting on 56 runs before Hussain fell caught at mid-wicket for 33. Adam Holdgate continued to bat excellently for 93 supported by Mike Taylor, Mike Beaton and Mike Richardson as the score continued to build. Adam looked sure to reach his century offering no chances until he was run out at the non-strikers end by a deflection from the bowler. Whereas the visitors middle and lower order batsmen fell away HR's strong batting order pulled together with Mike Richardson (23) and Tom LeMasurier (14) contributing well to leave 23 runs to get off the last 5 overs when skipper Pilcher joined Sam South at the wicket. With some scampered singles putting the fielding side under pressure and judicious hitting from Sam South (28 n.o.)the home side reached their target with an over to spare.
Great team work and spirit was shown by the side and congratulations to man-of-the match Mike Richardson and Mike Beaton, who received the 'play of the day' award for his fancy footwork and Messi-like control of the ball in the outfield.
