High Roding Cricket Club Won by 159 runs

Match report High Roding II climbed to 3rd place in HECL Div 3 after an efficient and crushing victory by 159 runs against Thaxted. The sun came out for a change and despite the previous day's heavy rain, play was possible due to the protection afforded by the covers and a 'mopping-up' exercise led by Mel Hussain.

Skipper, Richard Pilcher, lost the toss and Thaxted asked the hosts to bat. Callum and 'Paper, Rock,Scissors Champion',Sandy Barr, opened the batting for HR and put on 42 runs in 10 overs before Sandy 'played around' a straight ball and was bowled for 32. Shortly afterwards Callum (9)was dismissed in a similar fashion as Thaxted's bowlers, supported by well placed fielders, began to restrict the home side. It was left to Reece Hussain and Orban Holdgate to rebuild the innings. This pair mixed judicious defence, quick running and punishment of the bad balls to build the score. Gradually Reece began to open up and proceeded to plunder the visitor's attack to score a superbly paced 120 not out. He was ably supported by Orban (24), who was unfortunately run out by a bowler's deflection at the non-striker's end when 'well set'. Support for Reece was then supplied by Troy Featherstone (15), Richard Pilcher (27) and Stephen Heywood (12 n.o.) as the home side reached 252-6 off 45 overs.

The visitors were never 'in the game' as the start of their reply was hindered by probing, accurate and occasionally hostile bowling by Ashley (8-2-15-3) and Adrian (10-4-22-2), supported by tight fielding. After 22 overs the score was 52-2. With 200 runs to get in 23 overs the focus of the bowling attack changed to spin. Callum (6-0-19-2) and Orban (5-1-14-4)managed to get significant turn as they capitalized on the early pressure exerted by the opening bowlers. Wickets fell at regular intervals supported by smart catches from Ashley, Stephen and Sandy and a couple of stumpings by the keeper, Richard. After a spirited last wicket stand Ashley returned to the attack to bowl the last Thaxted batsman to bring the innings to a close at 99 all out.

Man of the Match - Orban Holdgate for his crafty leg-spin (5-1-14-4).

Play of The Day - Reece Hussain's towering 6's during his finely crafted unbeaten 120.
