Aspenden, S & P v High Roding Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 28 Jul 2012 at 13:30
High Roding Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
After winning the previous 3 matches High Roding 2nd team 'came up short' against a strong Aspenden team, losing by 7 wickets and thus dropping from 3rd to 5th in HECL division 3.
The visitors' were put in first on a green, fairly damp and poorly prepared wicket that exhibited variable bounce and turn. Several of the leading batsmen made starts but were unable to go on and make 'big scores', either succumbing to unplayable balls or bad shot selection. The innings was bolstered by a 77 run stand for the 9th wicket between Freddie Burns (35) and Ashley Allington (42)who mixed watchful defence with clean hitting. High Roding managed a below par 171 all out but did not use up the full allocation of overs.
The home side required less than 4 runs per over to win on a pitch, which having dried out, appeared to be losing its devilish characteristics. The visitors struggled in vain to contain the home side's batsmen as they reached the target off 40.4 overs. The bowling was generally economical, particularly from Ashley Allington, Callum Allington and Stephen Heywood, who all conceded less than 4 an over. However, taking wickets and keeping the score low proved hard as the home side always had a well set batsman at the crease. Our 3 wickets were all down to smartly taken catches by Troy in the covers and 2 standing up by keeper Richard Pilcher.
Man of The Match - Ashley Allington for miserly bowling (9.5-4-17-0) and top scoring with 42 runs.
Play of The Day - Richard Pilcher (day dreaming and getting run out attempting a single to long-on off his 1st ball) and Angus Burns (failing to pick up the ball in the covers to effect a run-out when both batsmen were at the bowler's end).
