High Roding Cricket Club 2nd XI v Woodford Wells IV on Sat 18 Aug 2012 at 13:30
High Roding Cricket Club Lost By 4 wickets
Match report
Searing heat in excess of 30 degrees Celcius and bright sunshine greeted promotion certainties Woodford Wells to High Roding. Having beaten league leaders Willingale in their previous match Woodford asked the home side to bat, upon winning the toss, as they hoped to 'skittle out' High Roding quickly and go home to enjoy the sunshine.
The home side dashed the hopes of our visitors by amassing a total of 285-6 built upon a fine opening stand of 66 between Martin and Stephen, which was capitalized upon by Ryan Palmer (106 n.o.), KD (40) and Adrian Pask (30 n.o.). The initial 20 overs were hard work for the opening pair as they battled against some tight and disciplined bowling from Woodford, supported by excellent field placings and tidy fielding. However, they both fell in consecutive overs leaving others to 'make hay' whilst the sun shone down and sapped the bowlers and fielders. KD was elegant and skillful carving boundaries on all sides of the square, falling short of what would have been his maiden fifty for HR. However, Ryan Palmer was in empiric form has he dominated the bowling attack, smashing boundaries to square leg, deep mid-wicket and long-on. He scored his maiden century consisting of 10 fours and 6 sixes to remain unbeaten at the end. The final 5 overs went for 50 runs as he was joined by Adrian Pask who made 30 runs from 14 balls.
Given the weather, the 'road-like' pitch and the strong Woodford Wells batting line-up, which contained no fewer than 9 centurions, 285 looked a 'par' score. The home-side's bowling attack worked hard supported by some tireless fielding to restrict the visitors. However, Woodford Wells batted well and timed their chase expertly to keep up with the run-rate and score 287 off 42 overs. Potgeister (131) , Khan (73) and Tupun (40) led the charge and despite losing 4 wickets in 4 overs, mainly due to a committed and hostile spell from Ryan Palmer (9-0-48-3)and carefully flighted deliveries from Anna (7-0-57-2)they won with 3 overs to spare. Our fielding was very good with some excellent catches taken by Mike Beaton and KD, whilst skipper RP took 4 catches keeping wicket (2 down the leg-side!).
We have dropped to 6th and need to win our last 2 games to move higher up the table and ensure that we are not relegated.
Man of The Match - Ryan Palmer - 106 not out - maiden century
Plays of the Day - Mike Beaton (super high catch - 1st for the club); Harry Pilcher (scoring for 35 overs!! and putting his 'body on the line' in the field and Anna Heywood for 'giving the ball lots of air' when bowling and getting a couple of wickets.
