Match report
It was a good win today, against a decent outfit from Saffron Walden, and a win that looked very unlikely in the first 10 overs in the field.
Having been asked to bowl first, all our bowlers struggled against two good openers, who ran well, and hit bad balls for four. They posted a 50 partnership in just 8 overs, and we were really helped out by the need to retire at 25! Both openers achieved that. From that point on, the game changed significantly, and all the bowlers bowled well, with wickets for David, Barny, Josh, Jonny and Claire (who was probably the pick of the bowlers). In fact, they only had 80 on the board at the start of the last over, but Jonny bowled a wide that went for four (so counting 6), and a no ball as well, to allow them to get up to 89.
It was quite a tough ask, and the two opening batsmen also opened the bowling. One was quite sharp, but because of that, he gave enough pace for Barny in particular to score quickly off him, and with Oliver Nancarrow offering stubborn support, and a few extras too, this pair put on 30 in just over 5 overs, to get the innings underway. With Harry Sturge coming in, and hitting a couple of powerful shots, we were in real control. Then Barny chipped one up to mid off, and Jonny managed to smash his stumps, going for a pull. When David was also out for 1, the score was 53-4, and we were getting nervous. Fortunately Harry Sturge continued to play well, and with good support from George, they got us close. Just as the win looked secure, Harry had a swing across the line, and was bowled (79-5), before George and Tom Gallian fell in consecutive balls to leave us 81-7. Fortunately, our player of the match, Claire Heywood, came in and with the help of Harry Warnes, added the 9 runs that we needed, to win with 8 balls to spare.
