Hatfield Heath v High Roding Cricket Club 2nd XI on Tue 19 Jun 2012 at 6pm
High Roding Cricket Club Won 20 runs
Match report
An efficient victory by 20 runs was gained in this 20:20 quarter-final of the Lords Int'l League Shield away against Hatfield Heath. High Roding displayed great team work and spirit with every team member contributing to our victory.
Skipper Richard Pilcher lost the toss and High Roding were invited to bat on a slow damp wicket. Troy and Callum opened the innings but unfortunately Callum was soon on his way back to the Pavilon as he was caught at mid-off off the second ball of the innings. The Hatfield Heath opening bowlers kept a tight line and length restricting the visitors to 30-2 off the initial 8 overs.
Troy Featherstone remained at the wicket with number 4 Orban Holdgate (31) to hit 37 in a partnership of 65 off the next 9 overs, as they made the most of less accurate bowling and slack fielding by the home side, who dropped several catches. Once Troy fell in the 16th over and Orban fell in the 17th over with the score on 94, wickets fell regularly as the lower middle order and tail scrambled 19 runs off the last 4 overs to finish on 113-7.
Hatfield Heath started their innings needing less than a run a ball on a wicket, which had not dried much in the previous 90 minutes, was still damp, slow and difficult to bat on. They started in an identical disastrous manner to their opponents as skipper Mark Graves was bowled off the second ball of the innings by Stephen Heywood (3-0-15-1), who bowled a tight and effective opening spell. From the opposite end Sam South (3-0-24-1) although relatively expensive also took the wicket of C.Weredon, who was caught behind off keeper Richard Pilcher after failing to walk a couple of balls earlier when given not out off a thick edge to the keeper. He had obviously not read Adam Gilchrist's autobiography and was sent to the Pavilion with an Aussie-like send-off!!!
The fall of early wickets brought M. Potter and Hatfield Heath Vice Captain Mike Collins together in a 35 run partnership off 4 overs until Potter was bowled emphatically by a Tom Le Masurier (4-1-21-2)'yorker'for 27. With the score on 49-3 after 8 overs the home side looked well placed as they were scoring above the required run rate and had wickets in hand. The visitors needed wickets and proceeded to get them as Angus Burns (4-0-15-2)bowled economically and picked up a couple of wickets from the Village end. Callum Allington bowled an eventful 2 over spell bowling a leg-side full toss for his first ball, which Mike Collins proceeded to thump for 6 over square leg with aplomb. This was followed by 11 balls in which be proceeded to bowl 3 batsmen out for only 5 runs!! Tom LeMesurier also chipped in with another wicket bowling Chapman with another spearing yorker. Mike Collins battled on to score 31 runs but could not find a partner to stay with him and was the last wicket to fall to another high catch in the gathering gloom by Reece Hussain off the bowling of Orban Holdgate (1.4-0-4-1). This brought the home side's reply to a close at 93, 20 runs short.
Thanks to RC for umpiring, Nigel for scoring and our many supporters, who outnumbered the home crowd....just!
Roll-on the semi-final!!!
Man of The Match - Top-scoring Mountaineer, Troy Featherstone, for his opening innings of 37.
Play of The Day - Reece Hussain for taking a steepling catch at deep mid on and NOT getting run over in the road.
