High Roding Cricket Club 2nd XI v Ilford Catholics III on Sat 02 Jun 2018 at 13:30
High Roding Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
What a performance by the bowlers today. Having won the toss, and not being sure about any rain, High Roding fielded first and the bowlers made the skipper look wise by bowling outstandingly well as a unit. Amit bowled unchanged uphill and had his obligatory drop by Tom in the slips (a very tough chance to be fair) and was unlucky to finish without a wicket. At the other end, Jonny rolled back the years with some excellent left arm seam bowling, and then came back at the end of the innings, going for less than 3 an over. Pasky followed Jonny from the top end and picked up two wickets off leading edges before being replaced by Cameron on debut, who bowled a lively 8 over spell and picked up two well deserved wickets for himself. Meanwhile, at the Pavilion End, Derek replaced Amit and bowled his full 9 overs on the bounce and picked up a well deserved 2-21. There were so few hittable balls bowled that, despite only losing 7 wickets, Ilford Catholics could only post a score of 146 off their 40 overs. Whilst the bowling lead the way, this was backed up by some great fielding, Welly taking two catches at gully, Rich M-J stopping the ball with every part of his body, Ben doing his usual excellent fielding at mid on and Alistair and Pilch competing for catch of the day. A really impressive performance in the field.
After a delicious Mrs Pilcher tea, Derek finally got to have a bat for High Roding when he opened the innings with Tom and promptly displayed some Gower-esque shots which even had Shrager purring from the non-strikers end. Tom meanwhile produced his usual stylish shots before being unfortunate to be bowled off his pads for 27. Derek proceeded to play beautifully before he realised his 6pm departure time was fast approaching and was bowled playing his shots just short of a maiden 50. However, the innings proceeded at the same pace with Rich M-J and Welly seeing us over the line with some lovely stroke play by Rich and some brutal hitting by Welly.
Congratulations to all today, it was a clinical performance and great to see all us old timers (Cameron excepted!) performing so well.
