High Roding Cricket Club 2nd XI v Bengeo on Sat 28 Jul 2018 at 13:30
High Roding Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
An excellent win today, with two of our colts leading the way again.
Having won yet another toss, we decided to bowl first on what was a very blustery day. George luckily made this look like a wise decision by bowling a superb opening spell of 7-2-15-2, with every ball testing the batsman. However, it would be remiss not to mention that one of these wickets was down to Ben taking the new front runner for catch of the season - a sensational full length diving effort in swirling winds. George was ably supported by Archie from the other end who was unlucky not to get a wicket. Will and Mukarram replaced our openers and kept up the good work with Will picking up a wicket thanks to a catch by Tom in the slips, which on any other day would have been catch of the day. Tahir contributed with an excellent run out and at 58-4 we looked as though we might run through their side. However, an excellent 100 partnership helped Bengeo to accumulate towards a decent total of 202 - with George, Will and another run out accounting for the remaining wickets.
In reply, we unfortunately lost Archie early but Tom and Will put on a steadying 50 partnership with Tom cutting and driving superbly and Will easing into his innings before punishing the bad balls. Tom was unlucky to scoop their spinner to midwicket, but this merely brought Tahir to the crease with his relentless running between the wickets. Will and Tahir carried on from their partnership last week, putting on another fine 50 partnership before Tahir was bowled trying to play another of his delightful late cuts. Welly replaced Tahir and played some lovely shots in the third consecutive 50 partnership of the innings. A couple of quick wickets with 20 runs still needed brought Freddie to the crease, but his quick running between the wickets helped Will lead us to victory with Will posting a career best 90 not out.
Full credit to George and Will today. George's opening spell was crucial in setting the tone and shows that George is back to his best form. However, player of the day was undoubtedly Will who followed up a great bowling display with yet another mature innings - judging the situation perfectly and taking responsibility for bringing the win home. It is great to see two of our colts show so much promise this season and help us old timers look good.
Thank you to Ben for an absolutely superb tea with Bengeo quite rightly describing it as the best they have had this season and thank you to Nige for scoring, good to have you back scoring the 2s.
