High Roding Cricket Club 2nd XI v Takeley II on Sat 11 Aug 2018 at 13:30
High Roding Cricket Club Lost by 28 runs
Match report
Sadly it was not to be in a lower scoring game than we are used to at High Roding, with the track offering a bit of variable bounce and the outfield being slowed by the recent rain.
We won the toss yet again and chose to field first on what looked like a decent wicket, but with a bit of moisture. However, after George removed their opener cheaply, the Takeley 2 and 3 played their shots and were marching along at about 7 an over. However, Clare managed to bowl their other opener and Jonny chipped in with their number 3 and their hard hitting number 4 for a duck. Unfortunately, this was the last of Jonny's bowling for the day as he twinged his back (while looking in great form). However, this did bring on Mukarram who bowled their number 6. From 64 for 1, Takeley were suddenly 82 for 5 and we looked right in the game. Mukarram continued bowling beautifully from one end (only going for 7 runs off his first 7 overs) whilst Pasky and Josh bowled well at the other end for no joy. Unfortunately, we did not pick up another wicket but all bowlers bowled well - with Clare and George particularly good at the end of the innings to keep Takeley below 200.
We thought we were probably in with a good chance of chasing down 191 for the win, but sadly it was not to be. Tom led valiantly from the front once again scoring a magnificent 66 before unluckily edging onto his stumps and Josh offered support at the other end. However, the rest of us could not build on this start and it needed a very entertaining 9th wicket stand between Clare and Mark Haddon to push our score up to respectability. It was just not our day with the bat, but full credit to Takeley for some good bowling as well.
Well done to all the team for giving everything though and a big thank you to the two Marks for stepping in at the last minute to help out. Final thank you to the Haddons for a delicious tea!
