Broomfield v High Roding Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 29 May 2021 at 13:00
High Roding Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
An excellent bowling performance in the sunshine set us on the way to an emphatic win over Broomfield 1st XI.
Sam (finally) won the toss and chose to bowl; this plan looked to backfire as openers Eglin and Farrow swung hard for the short boundary and raced to a half-century stand in eight overs. Stand-in opening bowler George (4-38) fought back superbly in his first league spell of the year and took four wickets in four overs to wrestle back the initiative and got everyone discussing which Halls is actually the better seamer. Josh was back from school captaincy duties and applied pressure from the other end and was rewarded with wickets either side of drinks, with assistance from a superb/misjudged one-handed Ben C catch.
Sam thought there was more in the pitch for the spinners so spent his first over avoiding it at all costs; the recovery from 1-0-16-0 to 9-2-35-0 was a real credit to the Broomfield batsmen's kindness. Gus replaced Josh for his first bowl of the season and his sharply-turning leg breaks beat the bat and H's gloves on several occasions and he picked up two deserved wickets. Kit returned for his second spell and cleaned up the tail to end the Broomfield innings for 162.
In reply, Roding lost Molly early to an excellent delivery from Reilley. The wicket brought Ben C out to join Ben S (Jeff should have been at 3 but was in the toilet / on the phone); the two Bens formed an excellent partnership, with clean hitting backed up with good running and communication. Both accumulated well before passing 50 with an onslaught of boundaries. Both eventually fell to catches in the deep, with S scoring 71 and C 73. The wickets, while annoying the skipper with the gifting of a bowling bonus point, did nothing to stop the flow of runs, as H strode out to the middle (promoted by Gilf as a birthday present) and promptly finished the chase with a heaved six over the longest boundary.
23 points, Terling lost heavily. Top of the league, strong day all round.
