High Roding Cricket Club 1st XI v South Weald 1st XI on Sat 05 Jun 2021 at 13:00
High Roding Cricket Club Lost by 1 runs
Match report
We began the day looking to strengthen our position at the top of Division 2. Despite a lost toss (true to usual form), we took to the field with optimism. Kit and Archie opened up, with the latter fired up and keen to prove that he is the better Halls bowler, and he only took an over to dispatch Weald's opener. Archie took 3 wickets in a superb 10-over spell, while Kit took one from his first 7 overs. At 43-4, we looked to be in a dominant early position.
In response, South Weald’s 5th wicket partnership amassed 191, with Lingala scoring 140 (on his last appearance no less) and captain Pye adding 73* after a scratchy start. Kit finally removed Lingala in the 43rd over but the scoreboard damage was done, as several dropped chances and some wayward bowling came back to haunt us.
Our chase of 249 to win stuttered, with four of the top six adding a total of 2 runs. Molly and George stood out with 43 and 70 respectively. Last week's stars Ben S and Ben C chipped to cover and chopped on respectively, while the captain will not be attempting anything other than a safe single for several weeks. At 100-5 we looked dead and buried but a superb rearguard effort from Angus (30), Harry (33 while counter-attacking & bleeding), Josh (32*), and (certified all-rounder) Archie (27*) got us to the last ball requiring 4 to win. Unfortunately, with at least 5 fielders defending the short side, the ball was stopped inside the fence and South Weald claimed a 1 run win.
Massive credit to Josh and Archie for their unbroken 62-run partnership in just 8 overs; we wouldn't have got close without it. Archie's ridiculous six down the ground off the Weald skipper possibly the highlight of the day. Huge.
We go again next Saturday vs third-placed Ingatestone & Fryerning CC.
