Ingatestone v High Roding Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 12 Jun 2021 at 13:00
High Roding Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
5 enforced changes, 3 golden ducks and 1 very special hundred saw us to an excellent win away at Ingatestone, who had not yet lost this season.
Alex stepped up for his 1st XI debut in Molly's absence and George Haddon came straight into the side the day after coming home from his first year of uni; Ben S took the gloves for the first time.
Sam won the toss and chose to field to a mixed response. Will opened the bowling and his hard work was rewarded with the wicket of Ingatestone opener Grobler. Sam opted to open the bowling up the hill and maintained a good economy in his first 5. Freddie and George were the first changes at each end and bowled tightly with limited reward. Sam ran out opener Wright thanks to Ben C shouting 'bowler's! bowler's! bowler's!' into his ear just to make sure the message got home. I&F put on 99 for the third wicket, with Eaton finally removed lbw by Sam after changing ends.
I&F were 112-2 at the second drinks interval and we expected an attempted acceleration. With a small boundary and a quick outfield the batting side had the advantage; Roy continued to accumulate steadily on his way to 97 while skipper Blackman swung hard for 37 from 19 before he picked out Will on the mid-wicket boundary off George's bowling. George's return spell also picked up the wicket of J Brailey to give him excellent figures of 2-35. Freddie cleaned up Smith in his final over as reward for his efforts. 232 was a reasonable score but we felt it was 30-40 short.
Our reply got off to the worst possible start, with Alex pinned in front for a golden duck on 1st XI debut. Jeff attempted to provide stability while Ben scored the bulk of the runs. After Jeff fell to a top-edge, Gilf came in at 4 to continue providing support. Ben and Gilf put on 90 for the third wicket, with Gilf contributing a watchful and essential 19. Ben reached his century with the score at 128 (a ridiculous 78% of the team total at that point). Gilf fell with the score at 152. His dismissal brought in Ben C; sadly the double-act couldn't resume their Broomfield partnership as Ben was rapped on the back pad and sent on his way without scoring. Gus' efforts at 6 helped maintain the scoring rate while Ben tired. Harry came in after Gus was bowled and promptly placed the ball straight into the hands of mid-on. Ben finally fell in the 37th over; Freddie (fresh from throwing up) and Sam exchanged boundaries to put on a quick and unbroken partnership of 28 to see us home with 4.1 overs to go.
Excellent 24-point win to consolidate our position at the top end of the table; 20 point gap to Eastwood in third.
