High Roding Cricket Club Won by 104 runs
Match report
A winning debut for High Roding Rogues in Last Man Stands cricket, with an emphatic opening batting performance setting the tone for the evening. Ben smashed a 16-ball 50 to retire first, targeting the short boundary to hit 9 boundaries. His retirement brought Freddie to the crease, who went hard at his first ball and was very unlucky to find a fielder. Will came in at 4 and used his long arms to get excellent power behind his shots, hitting 2 sixes in a 9-ball 21 before also picking out a boundary rider with another big hit. Walter played the anchor role, apologising for slow scoring after retiring on 53 from 28. Courtney, on HR debut, showed that his muscles aren't just for show, also hitting two maximums. Alex and Pilch were unlucky to be dismissed by good bowling into the body drawing skewed shots. Sam and Ben, returning to bat, saw out the innings, with a mixture of brute-force and clever running bringing the total to 210-5, with the skipper not out on 23 and Ben finishing with a frankly obscene 72 from 28 deliveries.
Our defence started as well as we could dream of, with Alex bowling a rank full-toss loosener that was sent straight into Walter's hands at deep mid-wicket. In his second over, the ball was scooped to fine leg and would have flown for six had anyone but Will been fielding there. Even then, he still had to step over the boundary line and smartly affected the catch by throwing the ball back infield to himself. Thanks to good fielding and tight bowling, the pressure did not let up throughout and Harlow's batsmen could only make starts. Walter and Will bowled smartly and with good pace, and both were unlucky to leave wicketless. Courtney came into the attack and bagged himself a debut wicket, a good response to aggressive batsmen. Walter followed up his second catch by completing a double-play, running out the non-striker and keeping our momentum high.
After the 10-over end change, Sam brought himself on (aka protected himself from the short boundary). First-ball long-hop four out of the way, he combined with Pilch for the latter's first stumping of the season as the batsman charged down the wicket. With 5 wickets down, the Rogues looked to be in pole position with 9 overs to go. On came Freddie for his second over, and four balls later, the match was over. A second excellent deep catch from Will was immediately followed by a twice-fumbled take from Ben in the covers. With the last man in, the field tightened to prevent the batsman running a two. The ball was nudged behind square, Alex collected and threw it in. Despite the batsman's protests, Pilch's work was impeccable, and the win was ours.
An excellent debut in LMS cricket for the club, with strong performances from a much younger side than our opponents. Thanks to Pilch for organising our involvement, and for brightening the darkening evening with his multicoloured neon gloves. We go again next Tuesday against Waltham Wanderers.
