Waltham Wanderers v High Roding Cricket Club High Roding Rogues on Tue 27 Apr 2021 at 18:15
High Roding Cricket Club Lost by 17 runs
Match report
A very close game against a strong Waltham Wanderers side ended in a 17-run defeat as the Rogues' chase ran out of steam.
After last week's dominant victory the biggest concern was who would replace Ben and Walter's combined 125 runs. Pilch drafted in Ben Speakman (via Holly) and Isaac, a gap year student at Felsted to take their places.
Wanderers won the toss and chose to bat. Alex and Will opened the bowling and after a cagey start dismissed both opening batsmen. Freddie bowled first change and removed dangerous-looking left-hander Jack 'Plumb' - more on him later. Sam brought himself into the attack earlier than last week and was rewarded with a wicket first ball, with Pilch taking a sharp catch as the ball skidded off the astro and clipped the outside edge. After the change of ends Courtney and Isaac bowled; Waltham's number 6 Madhav targeted the short boundary with the pace off and raced to 49 from 21. Isaac took his first HRCC wicket with a top edge easily held by Pilch. Sam came back and ended the Waltham innings with three wickets in his fourth over. One was a copy of his first, with the batsman graciously walking on appeal, while Courtney took two smart catches at long-off to hand Sam figures of 4-29. Credit to Ben in the field, who did not bowl (typically being a wicketkeeper) but ran non-stop and frequently displayed a bullet arm from the deep.
Freddie and Ben opened up the Rogues' reply and were welcomed with some effective short bowling that proved very difficult to score from. Freddie was caught behind for 7 to bring in Will. Ben continued to plug away but was eventually caught at long on trying to attack 'Plumb's' off-spin. Jack 'Plumb' actually turned out to be Essex 2nd XI and former England U-19 seamer Jack Plom - not the sort of opposition we expected to come up against in LMS.
With Ben's dismissal, Sam and Will came together and played with the intention of keeping their wickets and accumulating towards the target. Scoring slowly by the usual standards of LMS, the pair put together a solid partnership and gradually brought the Rogues closer to their target. Sam retired after reaching his 50, bringing Courtney in, who promptly dispatched his first ball towards Beehive Lane. Sadly he was bowled in the next over, bringing in Pilch at 6. He got off to a quick start and was on 13 from 6 before Will found a fielder in the deep and ran, with Pilch run out at the non-striker's end for a double play. Alex and Isaac tried to push the score along but were dismissed, bringing Sam back to the crease as the Last Man Standing. After some good running (and a scraped elbow), 18 runs were needed from 3 balls. Charging at a slower ball, Sam played all around it and couldn't get back to his crease, finding himself and the Rogues 17 runs short.
A valiant performance from a young Rogues side against one of the league's strongest teams, which included a professional cricketer! Congratulations to Ben and Isaac on their competitive HRCC debuts.
