Bengeo v High Roding Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 26 May 2018 at 13:30
High Roding Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report High Roding turned up on a lovely sunny day in Bengeo to find a rather damp, green looking pitch. Luckily High Roding won the toss and, advised by his team of bowlers, the skipper decided to bowl first.

George and Amit produced a probing spell of opening bowling, with Amit unlucky to have a dropped catch in the slips before George produced a gem of a delivery to bowl one of their openers. Blessed with an abundance of bowling options, it was possible to rest the openers after 5 overs each and to replace them with Will and Pasky, who kept up the pressure. However, Bengeo were still accumulating runs and were nicely placed at 81-1 before Will produced two wickets in three balls to remove their opener and no. 4 bat, both to catches by Tom in the slips - the first of which was an absolute blinder (which is why we are not mentioning his shocking drop off Amit!). Having made this breakthrough, it was time for the experienced pros, Chris and Derek, to take over - both of whom bowled well, particularly against some very attacking play by the lower order Bengeo batting. Chris picked up a well deserved wicket, however it is safe to say "Deadly" Derek was the pick of the bowlers with some great swinging deliveries and variations in pace - which led to 3 wickets and a run out off his own bowling. A further couple of run outs followed to end the innings (the last by Pilch, ironically being the only time he did not completely obliterate the stumps all day). All in all, it was a good performance by our bowlers on a hot day and they were backed up with a solid fielding display.

We knew 185 was a total which we should be able to chase down but it was important that our innings got off to a good start. Chris and Tom managed to do just that, not only providing us with a good start, but a fantastic middle and almost made it to the very end. It was an impressive display of batting against some mixed bowling, showing the importance of playing yourself in and punishing the bad ball. It was Shrager's second century opening stand in a row - with this one being worth 178. We will have to find him another opening partner next week and see if we can get a 200 opening stand! Both Tom and Chris batted beautifully with their contrasting styles, with the singles becoming fewer as Tom's groin injury resurfaced. However, Tom battled on for 88 before trying a huge slog in the interests of ending the game quickly. The next batsman, Will, then shook off his pad rash to come in and score the winning runs alongside Chris - who finished unbeaten on 71.

An impressive performance today by the whole team and, in the end, a comfortable victory. A great way to spend a sunny Saturday - the banter being as entertaining as usual in the field. Here's hoping our form continues into next Saturday against Ilford Catholics.
