High Roding Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report A day to forget in the Village Cup as some high-quality bowling and early-season bad luck for HRCC saw Stock to victory.

Winning the toss and choosing to bat turned out to be Roding's undoing as Stock captain Davison bowled with good pace and accuracy to take 5-24 in his 8-over opening spell. Chris looked in good touch before falling to a sharp catch from Stock wicketkeeper Raeburn, who ended the innings with four dismissals. Sam and Pilch both fell to catches that blurred the lines between luck and skill. Stock kept the pressure up throughout the innings and wickets fell regularly. Angus and Archie offered good resistance, and Nad, called into the team at 10am on the morning of the match, made his mark with a towering six into the trees. His was the last wicket to fall as HRCC were dismissed for 91.

In the field, Roding attempted to apply early pressure with an attacking field, and we tried to throw Stock a curveball by opening the bowling with off-spinner Josh. Despite both openers bowling well, chances were few, with the only reward being a run out brought about by a mix-up between the batsmen. Archie came into the attack as first-change, and his toe-targeting inswingers proved incredibly difficult to play. His excellent spell of 2-15 in 6 overs gave Roding some momentum, but Stock were able to score at a steady rate and reached their target in 18.2 overs.

Roding look to bounce back strongly in the opening round of T-Rippon league fixtures; the 1st XI host Terling while the 2nd XI travel to Rayleigh.
